Client : BOTSWANA MEAT COMMISSION
Cost of Works (Estimate) : P75, 000,000
Date of Completion : Completed 2012
Project Description
The project was for the refurbishment of the Botswana Meat commission Maun Abattoir to its original daily capacity of 100 head. The abattoir works included, lairages upgrade, replacement of abattoir equipment, steam boilers & steam reticulation, ammonia absorption refrigeration plant, renewal of walk in freezer rooms, installation of water storage and treatment plant, refurbishment of offices and canteen with new HVAC, kitchen and laundry equipment, construction and equipping of river water pumping station, and construction of effluent ponds complete with irrigation system.
Major Issues & Challenges

River Water Pumps
The challenges was met by augmenting the local water supply by construction of 1276m2 water storage and pumping and treating water from Thamalakane River. An RO plant was used to reduce silica and chlorides in water from the local water authority to standards required for meat processing.
Water Storage
The water supply reliability was realised by the installation of 4No. 7 x 7 x 3 high (319m3) section pane steel tanks. The Total storage was enough for 3 day autonomy.

Water cleanliness
To meet the stringent water cleaniliness levels required for meat processing , an RO plant was installed to treat both water from the local authority and river. River water was treated for bioligical matter and filterd through and activated carbon filters before storage and use.

Abattoir Equipment
Processing Area
Abattoir equipment included new platforms, and chain hoist in the stunning area, new carton conveyor in the Clean Offal Department cleaning and general restoration of all wash hand basin, sterilizers, platforms, etc., in the processing area.
Process plant floors
New specialised floor finishes and drains were done to attain a sterile environment for meat processing.
Platforms and Sterilisers
The old sterilisers and platforms could not be re-used. New equipment was thus supplied.

Steam Boilers
5000kg/hr capacity Coal and Diesel fire boilers operating on duty standby mode, supply steam for 45°C and 90°C steam heated calorifiers that supply. Diesel fired boiler was for use only when the coal fired boiler has failed or under maintenance due to its expensive fuel.Coal fired boiler is mainly used for its cheap fuel from Palapye.

Process Hot water Calorifiers
Process hot water supply was provided from steam heated 5000 litre capacity calorifiers reticulated to the 45°C and 90°C sterilisers through insulated and colour coded pipe work.
